BOSNIAIf you’re thinking of a place to visit this summer, why not try an exotic country of a different kind? You could make the choice of travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are many things to do, and many sites of attraction to see.

For instance, you should definitely pay a visit to the Bascarsija district, for some shopping. Here you will be able to pick up many unique souvenirs, and if you like coffee, you should stop for a while to have a traditional Turkish coffee – there are many cafes around this place. Blagaj, too, is a must-see. This tekkija lies at the base of a 200m cliff – the village itself is very peaceful, and it’s just a half-day’s trip from Mostar.

Bosnia and Herzegovina offers quite a lot in terms of water sports too. For instance, you can go whitewater rafting along the many mountain rivers of the country. You can easily choose a rafting tour along the Una, Tara, and Neretva rivers – this is an exciting activity indeed. If you like water sports, then don’t just stop at whitewater rafting, we suggest you also take in some kayaking – which this place is famous for! Yes, when it comes to sports, Bosnia and Herzegovina offers more than enough potential. You can also go hiking along the mountainous landscape – however you should make sure you avoid those areas where landmines are still a threat. If you want to do some combined rafting, hiking, and village tourism, then we suggest heading to Bjelasnica Mountain.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is famous for its Winter Festival, held around February-March every year, in Sarajevo. This is basically an arts festival which was established a long time back – well before the war in the 1990’s. The festival goes on for two months, and celebrates worldwide talent; it symbolizes creativity and fun-filled spirit in diverse countries and cultures. The Sarajevo film-festival too, is a must-see. This is probably the most popular among all the festivals of Sarajevo. The festival is held in August, and if you are a movie buff, then you should definitely try to be in Sarajevo around this time, to catch some of the best films from the neighboring countries – you will surely marvel at the artistic standards.

Of course, you cannot head to Bosnia and Herzegovina without taking in some of the culinary fare. You would be surprised to know that this particular country has the highest number of barbecue restaurants per person, and per square kilometer. Try the “cevape” – which is a classic dish, made of a secret mix of minced beef, lamb, mixed together with amazing spices. It’s served with chopped onions and homemade bread, and served in quantities of 5, 7, or 10. If you head to Central Bosnia, you would probably find special cevape restaurants with people eating nothing but the cevape from metal plates. Unless you want to be given strange looks, never ask for side salads. The usual drink that goes with this is yoghurt, as alcohol is not generally served.
